Police in Shoebury are asking motorists to take extra care after a recent rise in car crime in the area, especially those people who own old-style Fords and Fiestas.
Operation Greenfly has been launched to counteract this issue, leading to several arrests already. Police are urging motorists to be vigilant and step up crime prevention measures around their vehicles.
Crime Reduction Officer, Mrs Lorna Watson, said: "It’s important to lock your car at all times, making sure the windows are closed. If possible, park your cars in well-lit areas or places that are easily visible to others. Investing in a crook-lock is also a good deterrent and, of course, never leave any items on display.”
Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Jeff Appleby is pleased with the success of the operation so far, but knows work is still needed on the issue.
He said: "We have put this operation in place, along with high-visibility policing, to stop this issue. We hope by working together with motorists that it will stop the thieves who bring inconvenience and misery to their victims.”
